I think it is so important for a photographer to visit a venue prior to a wedding day. For me, it helps to be physically on the property to visualize space and layout, to find the best lighting and also scout for unique photo opportunities. It’s a bonus if I get to check out the venue with my couple so we can discuss ideas together!
With that in mind, I took a trip out to my soon-to-be residence to visit venues in the area and get a feel for the lifestyle. I was overwhelmed by the many fabulous venues and locations in Virginia and (of course) visited the ones that were most picturesque. These are my Top 5 favorite venues in the Northern Virginia area and if you’re a couple getting married at one of these places, shoot me an email. I have a special offer for 2021/2022 dates!
1. Great Marsh Estate
Indoor/Outdoor options
Intimate + Large Gatherings (up to 200)
The Great Marsh Estate may be in a more rural area of NoVa, but it’s one not to be missed. This venue is a photographers dream! Trust me, your jaw will drop when you see this place. The manor offers a gorgeous indoor space for guest to mingle before the ceremony takes place on the lawn at the back end, overlooking acres of land. The reception to follow is just down a line of trees, leading to a huge barn with plenty of indoor and outdoor space. (fire pits, too!) If you’re a couple that has an appreciation for both elegance and simplicity, Great Marsh is a place worth visiting.
What makes this venue so great? The large getting ready areas for not just the bride, but the groom as well. The girls can be upstairs in the lavish rooms with plenty of light and the boys downstairs making drinks at the bar and playing some pool. It’s also ONLY a wedding venue so you don’t have to worry about any random people wandering around during your big day!
2. Goodstone Inn & Restaurant
Indoor/Outdoor options
Intimate + Large Gatherings (up to 200)
(Need to provide tent for larger gathering)
This location is perfect for the couple looking for the full wedding experience but not a huge party. If you want the big party you’ll have to provide a tent, but I think that a 50 guest wedding fits in perfectly with the space. The Goodstone Inn is full of charm and sprinkled throughout with gorgeous stained glass pieces. It really is a unique venue, plus a great getaway for your guests, too!
What makes this venue so great? The accommodations, dining and beautiful surroundings make this a perfect place to celebrate for a whole weekend. There is also a pool on the grounds and what better way to welcome your guests than with a pool party?!
3. The Red Fox Inn & Tavern
Outdoor Only (but can be tented)
Intimate Gatherings (20-25)
The Red Fox Inn & Tavern is a hidden gem located right on the main street of Middleburg, VA. AKA, the most quaint town you’ll ever visit. The property itself it spread out amongst a couple blocks and includes a historic tavern, boutique like suites and cottages and lush walkways and gardens connecting it all. This venue is perfect for the no-fuss couple wanting an intimate ceremony and dinner for around 20.
What makes this venue so great? Not only is this venue historic and charming, but a beautiful place for your guests to stay, too!
4. Pippin Hill Farm & Vineyard
Indoor/Outdoor options
Intimate + Large Gatherings (up to 200)
No list is complete without the infamous Pippin Hill Farm & Vineyard located just outside Charlottesville, VA. The view alone is worth having a wedding here, the wine is a close second. The food was also UH-mazing. Honestly, I don’t know if there is a vineyard more perfect!
What makes this venue so great? The view, the food and close location to Charlottesville for great guest accommodations/sightseeing!
5. The Clifton Inn
Indoor/Outdoor options
Intimate + Large Gatherings (up to 300)
My final (and probably most impressive!) venue is The Clifton. Wow, wow, wow. If you’re having an extravagant celebration or an intimate gathering, Clifton has you covered with the most beautiful spaces. They have a huge court tent, an intimate secret garden, a sprawling lawn with the mountains as your backdrop, even a posh, yet cozy, library. Really, the options seem endless. I also love that it’s another location for bride and groom accommodations; as well as, for guests.
What makes this venue so great? The Clifton has EVERYTHING- Stay & lodging. Catering. Multiple types of Ceremony/Reception spaces. Numerous photo ops. Things to explore in the area…the list goes on an on. If you want a venue that has everything you need AND more, this is it.
